Race Scoring
Written by Richard Phillips /amended by Barry Sticklen Wednesday, 08 November 2006 00:00
At LTSC, like most clubs, we use the Portsmouth Yardstick (PY) scheme for handicapping dinghies. The PY number is the length of time (eg Seconds) that a class of boat should take to complete a race of 1000 (seconds).
Thus an RS 400 with PY 948 finishing in 949 seconds would be beaten on corrected time by a Laser 4.7 with PY 1175 finishing in 1175 seconds. For further information about the PY system see the RYA website.
The RYA encourages Clubs to make changes to the published PY numbers to reflect local conditions. At LTSC we have a very large number of classes racing and in the majority of cases with few participants in each class and a very wide range of abilities. Consideration has been given to applying different PY numbers however the effect of tidal strength and direction makes the situation very complex and like many clubs we feel that it would cause more controversy than benefit to change the PY numbers from those published by the RYA. The best that can be expected from a handicap system is that over the course of a season the swings and roundabouts will have evened out the situation.
There is no real substitute for Class racing. In an attempt to promote Class Racing at LTSC, we will if requested produce Class results for any event in which six or more boats of the same class participate. There has been discussion in the past as to whether the boats with different rigs (such as Laser tandard/Radial/4.7) wish to have their results combined (using appropriate handicap) for the purpose of producing separate results. Racing with different Trims. Boats with different trims are scored in a series using the lowest PY number for the trims used. (DSSI 2012 17.5). For example a Laser single handed dinghy can be sailed with a Standard (PY 1085), Radial (PY1110) or 4.7 (PY 1175) rig during a series and the lowest PY will be applied. Thus a Laser Radial sailor who decides to use a 4.7 rig because it is very windy will have all the races scored with a PY of 1110.
Similarly if that sailor decides that they could manage a standard rig because the wind is very light then all the results for that series will be rescored with a PY of 1085. To encourage participation and to promote safety we wish to encourage people to change rigs to suit the conditions. Oh says the Laser Radial sailor so if I want to experiment in a race in the Series and try out a Standard rig, then I can complete a separate entry form for that race so as not to have my other results re-scored – Yes but please state the rig used and that you want it treated as a separate entry very clear on the signing on sheet before the start of the race.
Changing boats during a Series. The Sailing Committee will normally grant permission under DSSI 2012 17.3 to owners who change their boat for a new boat providing it is the same class and in the same configuration. Sailors who pick and chose between boats with different hull shapes during a series will not be granted permission to treat the results in a series as one boat. Changing Helm or Crew during a Series DSSI 2012 17.4 states that “A boat will be scored as a single boat in a series only if her helmsman and/or crew is the same in all races, or the same team is in the boat” This means for a single handed boat that if a boat has different helms each will be scored separately. For a double handed boat then either the helm or the crew or team must be designated as being used to identify the boat for the results. So if a boat has two or more different helms but only one crew it is treated as one entry, similarly a boat with one helm and two or more different crew is treated as one entry, or the same team is in the boat for each race. Average Points for Helping Boats unable to race due to a member of the crew being on duty helping to run the race will be awarded average points. See DSSI 2012 17.6 for full details) if you have any queries about the Sailing Instructions or racing at LTSC please contact the Sailing Secretary.
