Race 6

Fifty get a perfect day

The 50 competitors in the sixth race were met with a perfect sailing day on Sunday November 25 with a 10 knot north westerly breeze and a tide about to turn to the ebb.

Once again the fleet was given a spinnaker test with a couple of short legs which made demands on crew work.

For once Peter Scholfield's HOD355 Zarafa did not  win, conceding victory to William Newton's J105 Jelly Baby by 50 seconds. However by treating her second place as a discard  Zarafa still has an impressive seven point lead in the eight race series.

In IRC class 2 the consistent Swan 41 Phillipides  (AWS Hall) has notched up a five point lead with an impressive victory.

Club handicap has tighter racing with half time  handicap changes coming in to play. Philip Hutchinson's Hustler 35 Leonora leads the Rustler 24 Emilia by just 1.5 points.

Folkboat one-design racing is probably the most exciting with Rick Otten's Yukon on nine points followed by three boats each with ten points so no  let up there.

Race 4

50 yachts enjoyed sunshine and force 3 wind

Wind was north, north east to North easterly cool breeze increasing from 7 to 10 knots during the race but fading away soon after the end of racing. The sun broke through the mist for a perfect days racing The neap tide was ebbing.

All 9 Class 1 boats, 12 of the 13 Class 2, 14 of the 18 Club Handicap, 13 of the 15 Folkboats and both of the non spinnaker boats raced.

A moveable mark was laid as the windward mark approx 020 degrees and 1 nm from the Committee boat which was a short distance to the south west of Berthon.

Class 1 and 2 raced to the moveable mark and then a zig zag course downwind to Lymington Bank. The other classes beat  to the moveable mark and then ran to Yacht Haven with a very close fetch to the Committee boat. Class 6 course was shortened to one lap and all other classes completed two laps.

Race 3
Wind was SSW 25 knots gusting to 32 knots - Tide changed from flood to ebb during the race.

The strong winds saw a reduced number of starters - Class 1- 5 boats; Class 2 - 6 boats; Class 4 - 5 boats - Folkboats -  6 boats and Class 6 - 1 boat

All boats sailed the same course - Lymington Bank - Pylewell

Big breeze gave close racing
(Report from Iain Sutherland)

With the south-westerly wind gusting to over 30 knots it was no surprise that many boats decided against
sailing the third race of the Lymington Town Sailing Club's Wightlink West Solent Circuit on Sunday (October 27).
In fact a total of 23 boats came to the start to sail a windward/leeward course set by principal race
officer Mike Rayden.

All classes were given the same course with only the number of laps varying.
With the first mark being Lymington Bank off Yarmouth a traditional beat along the mainland shore sorted the
fleets out, the trick being knowing when to tack for the mark  with GPS being very handy as it was
difficult to see in the murky conditions.

In IRC class 1, Peter Schofield's HOD 35, Zarafa was always in the heels of scratch boat Cornel Riklin's
Shipman 50 Moondance.  Zarafa was one of the few boats to hoist a spinnaker on the downwind leg which enabled her to win by over five minutes from Martin Gee's Elan  40 Deuce with Moondance half a minute behind her on corrected time.  Phillipides won class 2 despite a torn mainsail while in Class 4 Philip Hutchinson’s Hustler 35 Leonora beat Rob Milledge’s Contessa 32 Contessa Catherine by less than a minute. In the Folkboat class, the first four boats finished within two minutes of each other with Mark Crader’s Moonraker taking victory.

Race 2
Wind was 4 to 10 knots  - again brilliant sunshine but an ebb tide. The start was a beat into the tide in a light north-easterly wind which gradually increased and veered towards the south during the final stages of the race.

7 boats started in Class 1 and 10 boats in Class 2. Each class had a beat to Ynglinggirls, with a fetch to Solent Bank and a run to Yacht Haven, followed by a beat to the Committee boat stationed between Berthon, Pylewell and Rib-it.com. On the second lap the run turned into a reach with a fetch back to the finish where the course was shortened.

14 boats started in Class 4 (Club Handicap) but 6 did not finish the course which was the same as that sailed by the 13 Folkboats being a beat to  Rib-It.com, run to Berthon (which turned into  a reach on the second lap) and a further run to Yacht Haven

The single cruiser completed two laps of the course - Rib.it.com - Berthon - line.

Race 1
Wind was easterly 6 to 8 knots forecast to veer (but did not!). Racing was held on a flood tide with great sunshine - a brilliant start to the series!

The 8 boats in Class 1 started on time at 9.35 with the wind backing turning the first leg to Solent Bank into a fetch with a reach to Ynglinggirls and a run back to Pylewell.
Class 1 completed all three laps

Due to the wind shift as the Class 1 (IRC 1) boats started, the Class 2 start was postponed. The start line was reset and course changed.

Classes 2, 3 and 4 had a beat to Ynglinggirls and a run back to Pylewell.

Class 2 (IRC 2) started with nine boats and completed 3 laps.

The 5 Class 3 (IRC 3) boats started together with 9 Class 4 (Club Handicap) boats

The 11 Folkboats had a beat to Rib-it and then a fetch to Jacksons followed by a beat to Ynglinggirls and a run back to Pylewell.

The two cruisers enjoyed a close race of three laps consisting of a  beat to
Rib-It and a run back to Pylewell.
