WSCRA HYPOTENUSE SERIES
WSCRA (West Solent Cruiser Racing Association) held their annual Hypotenuse mini racing series last week end made up of a triangle of three races from the Western Solent to Cherbourg, Cherbourg to St Vaast and the final return race on the Sunday, St Vaast to Home. A fleet of 14 yachts from Lymington Town Sailing Club, Royal Lymington Yacht Club and Royal Solent Yacht Club based in Yarmouth Isle of Wight were split into two fleets. Class 1 racing under IRC and Class 2 WSCRA Club handicap. The first race commenced at the Bridge Buoy in the Needles fairway at 1700hrs on Thursday morning in a healthy breeze of 12to 14 knots. Unfortunately this breeze did not hold up and by mid afternoon the majority of the fleet had to turn on their engines to ensure an arrival in Cherbourg in time to find an open restaurant. Two boats managed to finish, which is a credit to their sailing skills and the patience of the crews. In class 1 Keith Passmore s Walk on By completed to achieve a first and Barry Dutton’s Juggler took over 14 hours to be the only finisher in Class 2.

Friday lunchtime saw the fleet reforming in light airs at the western entrance to Cherbourg for the race to St Vaast. Tactics varied seeing the fleet split between those going offshore for wind and those staying inshore to catch the favourable tidal back eddies. At the last mark, Le Equet Cardinal before running for home it was difficult to detect who had taken the favourable course. Richard Pierrepoint in his Elan, Moon easily led Class 1 completing in an elapsed time of 4.44hrs but in Class 2 racing was much closer with Richard Jenner’s Contessa 28 winning in an elapsed time of 5 an a half hours right on the heels of Pat Stables Goggle Eye who was second in Class 1.

The fleet had a rest day on Saturday in St Vaast where it met up with the crews of 12 yachts from the Lymington Town Sailing Club who were on a mini cruise. An excellent BBQ was joined by all on the sea wall where the merits of racing v cruising were discussed and debated until the early hours.

On Sunday the fleets again assemble of St Vaast for an early start. Winds were again very light and within the first hour most crews were debating the options of when they would have to turn on the engine if they were to have the tide with them for the Hurst Narrows. Fortunately the example set by one or two boats that went inshore for the early turn of the tide allowed the start boat who was allowed to start 5 minutes after the fleet to demonstrate that the wind was coming up. The day turned into a perfect days race sailing with winds up to 16 knots most of the way home. The two brief periods of fog were offset by some excellent fetches and close-hauled spinnaker flying up to the finish off the Needles. An excellent race where all but one boat finished.

WSCRA was originally formed in 1973 to arrange small yacht racing amongst the local clubs after initial success the changes in racing saw the association wound up in the early 1990’s One of its original members ex LTSC Commodore Barry Dutton decided to revive WSCRA in the light of dwindling numbers for Club Keel boat racing. The association is now made up of Lymington Town Sailing Club, Royal Lymington Yacht Club and the Royal Solent Yacht Club. In addition the Hypotenuse Mini Series WSCRA have a series of 12 races within the Western Solent, which are taken from each of the clubs schedule of races. The events have grown in popularity over the past 3 years due to the strong interclub organisation and friendship and the support of the sponsor Ringwood Brewery
