Sunday Summer points A series reports
Sunday Summer Points A & B - 5th race report
Written by Richard Lilley Monday, 28 June 2010 21:34
Blue skies and a shifting breeze from the north greeted competitors for the 5th race in the Sunday summer series.
The first race of the day saw the fast fleet away cleanly on a course that took them over to the Lymington Bank buoy. With the tide turning across the course it was a close run thing between the spinnaker boats and the RS600’s.
At the finish it was the 29’r of Havers who held on for the win from Chiperfield in the 600. Next away were the medium handicap fleet, with four of the fleet having timing problems and setting off a full minute early! The shifting gusty conditions caught out the unwary and capsizes were observed! Tim Power was the class of the fleet in his RS Vareo. Race two saw both fleets on a tight triangular course. Racing was tight and a sound understanding of the rules was required at the congested marks.
The medium fleet had a close finish again with the rs100 of Simon white taking line honours. The fast fleet enjoyed a very close race. With places changing around the course the outcome was unclear right to the last. At the finish 30 seconds separated the first five boats! The rs500 of Justin and Rebecca hannam took a well deserved first win of the season. With all crews gearing up for the club regatta on the 3rd/4th of July
The tempo looks set to continue!!

Sunday Points A & B Series - Strengthening northerly leads to exciting sailing
Written by Leslie Ross Thursday, 06 May 2010 20:50
The sky larks were singing over the Lymington Marshes early on Sunday morning, but they were quiet by the time of the 10.30 start. The building cold northerly left a wintry feel but it led to some exciting sailing. In the fast fleet, 6 starters enjoyed an excellent course set by Richard Russell. The course suited the well sailed RS 800, Richard Keeton and Richard Mayo who were soon in the lead giving a demonstration of fast skiffs sailing. Nick Simmons and Dan Dytch in their RS 400 took second. The result was repeated in the second, much windier race.
In the medium fleet a high quality group of Blaze dinghies set the pace. at the front Leslie Ross and Miles Mence had a tough battle. Ross initially held the lead but Mence caught him after two downwind legs. Ross drew ahead before the leeward mark and had pace upwind, but Mence again closed downwind, Ross just holding out to win by seconds. Simon Ward took third in another Blaze.
In the second race the wind began to gust over 20 knots which took a toll on the fleet. Ross not starting due to a back injury. Mence capsized several times, as did the other Blazes, and took third. This left Adrian Baker in his Streaker in 1st and Miles Mence 2nd.

Sunday Summer Points A & B - 25th April - Spanky start to Summer Series
Written by Leslie Ross Monday, 26 April 2010 00:00
It was a great start to the Summer series with a turnout of 18 dinghys in two fleets. The day after the clubs first open day which was a huge success and attracted many new members to join this friendly and prestigious sailing club, but it was not new members but many of the regulars who enjoyed success in good winds of 15 gusting 20 knots. The fast fleet were first away but conditions suddenly closed in with some sea mist the course was shortened in case it turned to fog. Fortunately conditions cleared and both sets of races were off. Notable performances include Richard Lilley in his Musto Skiff “Spanky” who sailed a stunning race to take the win. He might have been challenged by the 29er “Orangina” but they managed a spectacular capsize. The second race was won by rarely Sober sailed by John Cooper and Becc1 Wigley, with Orangina second and Fireball sailed by Rob and Jo York an excellent 3rd
In the medium fleet Richard Russell built up a big lead in race 1 but also wiped out on a gybe and could not recover quickly enough to get on the podium. It was left to Philip Gwyther in his Laser radial to have the best score of the day with two second places. Both races were won by Blazes. Myles Mence in the first and Simon Ward the second. Adrian Baker might well have been on the podium twice but after a navigation error retired from the second race.
