2011 Sunday Early Summer Points Series: Race Report Race 9 (June 26 2011)
Written by Barry Sticklen Sunday, 26 June 2011 00:00
With the weather getting up to its normal tricks for this series, or so it seemed, the scheduled start time came and went with the wind was blowing from the North East at 1.8 knots gusting 3 knots. Yet another postponement was on the cards. The wind did come in this time though so not all was lost. The safety boats were finally launched and by the actual start time the wind it had moved round slightly to the East North East and gathered pace to some 10 knots. The tide would be ebbing for both of the scheduled races, and with low water at 1300ish there would not be much water left in the river for their return.
Richard Lilley was the Race Officer assisted by Nick Heissig. All was finally set on the Committee boat Baverstock, and the first race started at 1150 with 26 boats coming to the line. Of those 10 were fast fleet boats, 15 were medium and there was the Slow fleet RS Terra of Liam Willis.

By the end of the second lap Giles Lloyd Williams & Fiona Mayo in their twin wire 29er had moved up into second place followed by Kevin Podger & Hannah. The order would remain for the third and final lap.
In the Medium fleet David Gorringe in his RS 100 was in the lead at the end of the first lap followed by Richard Russell also in an RS 100, but with the smaller rig. Next across the line was Leslie and Maddie Ross in their RS 200. The order in this race would remain for the second & final lap.
In the Slow ‘Fleet’ Liam Willis took the honours.
B Series Race 9
In the second fast fleet race Nigel Walbank again took the lead and by the end of the first lap he had Giles Lloyd Williams & Fiona Mayo behind him. Third was Geoff Havers & Jo Barriball in their 29er, this 29er though one only had a single wire. 20 seconds behind Geoff was Kevin Podger & Hannah, they were starting to climb up the fleet. By the end of the final lap although Nigel kept the lead, Kevin Podger & Hannah had sneaked up into 2nd place over the water followed by Geoff Havers & Jo Barriball.
5 minutes later the medium fleet were off again. At the end of the first lap David Gorringe was in the lead again, this time from Leslie & Maddie Ross in second place, followed by Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger in their Tasar in third place, who were 3 seconds ahead of Richard Russell in fourth. 2011 Sunday Early Summer Points Series: Race Report Race 8 (June 19 2011)
Written by Barry Sticklen Sunday, 22 May 2011 00:00
Following the cancellation of races 5, 6 & 7 of the Sunday Early summer Series due to inclement weather, the series would resume when races 8A & 8B were sailed on 19th June 2011. The Race Officer was Geoff Havers, ably assisted by assistant race officer Jo Barriball. The tide was flooding and the wind was coming from the SW ranging between 16 & 12kts gusting 20 to 24 knots. 7 fast boats and 17 medium fleet boats made their way to Baverstock for the A series race No 8.
The fast fleet were off at 10.35 going round Moveable, Colten Yacht Haven & East Mark. They would be shortened to 2 laps. Richard Lilley & Declan Clamp led the way in their RS 800 from Nigel Walbank in his Musto Skiff, and John Cooper & Becci Wigley in their RS 400. David Gautier (Picture) in his Contender would be 4th across the line but would sneak into 3rd on handicap.
Meanwhile the Medium fleet went at 1040am sailing a similar but shorter course. Tim & Mayumi Knight in their Tasar led the way from Miles Mence in his Blaze by 14 seconds at the end of the first lap; Stewart Watson in his Blaze was third. The order would remain the same for the 2nd and final lap but Miles would sneak the win on handicap.
The course was changed for the next race for the fast fleet to, Moveable, West Mark, East Mark & home. This time they would be shortened to one lap. There would only be 5 finishers in this fleet this time with Nigel Walbank taking line honours from Richard Lilley & Declan Clamp. David Gautier finished a respectable 3rd but again leapt over other boats, this time though to take the win.
The Medium fleet would again sail a similar but shorter course taking in Jack in the Basket instead of East Mark. This time Miles Mence took the lead from Tim & Mayumi Knight with Stewart Watson in 3rd. Philip Gwyther was sneaking through the pack and ended up crossing the line in 4th place. It was however enough for him to leapfrog over Stewart to take 3rd on handicap.

In the first race the fast fleet were off at the scheduled time with Luke & Emma McEwen in their RS 800 taking line honours, but the excitement was brewing behind with the RS 400’s of Kevin Podger & Heather Chipperfield and John Cooper & Becci Wigley following very closely. At the end of the first lap Kevin & Heather were 8 seconds in front of John & Becci. At the end of the final lap this lead would be narrowed to 5 seconds. The second race followed a similar format with Luke & Emma streaking off, this time though they had done enough to keep the RS 400’s behind them over the water and on handicap.
Meanwhile the medium fleet set off at 10.35 with Miles Mence in his Blaze setting the pace. Miles took line honours by some 4 minutes from The RS 100 of Giles Chipperfield and Tim & Mayumi Knight in their Tasar. This lead would be extended to over 5 minutes on corrected time. The second race panned out similarly with Miles taking the lead and handicap win by about 1 minute from Giles. But This time Stewart Watson in his Blaze and worked his way through the field to 3rd place when the times were corrected. Tim and Mayumi had dropped back to 5th with Richard Russel in his RS 100 snatching 4th place.
