Sunday Late Series A & B  –  25th September 2011

The ninth race of the Sunday Late series A & B was sailed on 25th September 2011. The Race Officer was David Gorringe assisted by Dennis London.

12 fast fleet boats and 10 medium fleet boats had signed on for this mornings racing. The wind was blowing from the South at 15 knots gusting 19. The tide would be ebbing for the duration, so it would be almost wind against tide.

The course was set with a movable mark positioned approximately south of ‘Baverstock’ towards West Mark. It was to be a windward / leeward course. The leeward mark was Black & Orange. The first starts had to be delayed however due to the anchor on the outer distance mark and the mark itself deciding to go walkabout. This was hastily re laid and the fast boys & girls were off at 1055; only 25mins late. Two of the fleet decided not to play and the remaining 10 boats commenced battle. The first race was finished after 2 laps. Luke & Emma McEwen in their RS 800 were as sharp as ever leading the fleet home and finishing some 7 minutes ahead of the second boat, the 29er of Geoff & Georgina Havers. Third was the RS 400 of John Cooper & Becci Wigley. These were only ‘over the water results’ though. After calculating the handicap positions, Luke & Emma would retain first, but John & Becci would climb over Geoff & Georgina to snatch second by 9 seconds on corrected time.

The Medium fleet were off on their first race at 1105. They were set the same windward / leeward course but would only do one lap. Mile Mence in his Blaze was also as sharp as ever, being first home at 1127ish. Stewart Watson also in a Blaze took second place over the water, with Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger in their Tasar 3rd. Further down the fleet at 5th & 6th a nice battle was developing with Richard Russell in his RS 100 snatching the position from Adrian Baker in his Streaker on the line by 2 seconds.

For the second race the course was altered slightly, this time they would be using West Mark & Black & Orange. The wind was very similar in strength but had moved round a bit towards the South West. The second race started for the fast fleet at 1156. It was to be a short crash & burn of 5 laps for both fleets.

At the end of the second lap for the fast fleet John Cooper & Becci Wigley in their RS 400 were first over the line from Kevin Podger & Heather Chipperfield in another RS 400. 3rd was Geoff & Georgina Havers in their 29er. At this stage Luke & Emma McEwen were lying in 4th. After recovering from a capsize Luke & Emma spent the remaining laps climbing up through the fleet, ending up first over the water at the end of the fifth lap. Kevin Podger & Heather were 2nd and John & Becci 3rd. After the Handicaps were applied Kevin & Heather had done enough to snatch first from John & Becci. Geoff & Georgina took 3rd relegating Luke & Emma into 4th.

In the final medium series race Miles Mence in his Blaze again led the way this time, from Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger in their Tasar 2nd, and Richard Russell in his RS 100 third. The positions almost remained the same except for Philip Gwyther in his Streaker getting by Richard Russell at the end of the 3rd lap. It was only lent though as Richard returned the complement during the next lap. It was all change though when the calculations were done. Miles would hold onto 1st but Philip Gwyther in his Streaker had secured second place, Charlotte Gwyther was hot on his heels though taking the third place 40 seconds behind on corrected times.

Sunday Late Series A & B  –  18th September 2011

The eighth race of the Sunday Late series A & B was sailed on 28th September 2011. The Race Officer was Tig Williams ably assisted by Fiona Mayo as assistant Race Officer.

6 fast fleet boats and 6 medium fleet boats had signed on for this mornings racing. The wind was coming from the West at 13 knots gusting 18. The tide would be flooding for the duration so it would be wind with tide; it was really starting to feel a bit autumnal though.

The first start for the fast fleet was on time from Baverstock at 1030. At the end of the first lap Richard Lilley in his RS 600 was in the lead from Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey in their International 14. Third, were Matthew Thomas & Steve Nicholas in their RS 400. Fourth were Mike & June Baker in their Laser 4000. At the end of the first race Richard Lilley had retained the first from Peter Conway and Ginny Harvey, but Mike & June Baker had snatched third from Matthew Thomas and Steve Nicholas. When the handicaps were applied though, things changed. Richard Lilley would retain first but John Cooper & Becci Wigley in their RS 400 leapt up to second place from 4th over the water, with Matthew Thomas & Steve Nicholas taking third spot.

At 1035 the medium fleet were off. First to show was Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger in their Taser from Richard Russell in his RS 100. Third at this stage was Philip Gwyther in his Streaker with fourth place being occupied by David Gorringe in another RS 100. By the end of the second lap and finish of the first race, Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger were still first over the water from Richard Russell, but David Gorringe had moved up into third. When the handicaps were applied this time though, Philip Gwyther had done enough to take the first, with Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger and Richard Russell being relegated to second & third respectively.

The second race for the fast boys & girls started at 1118 with the RS 600 of Richard Lilley leading the way again. Second this time was Mike & June Baker in the Laser 4000, with John Cooper & Becci Wigley in their RS 400 third. The order would remain the same for the remainder of the race. Again Richard Lilley kept hold of the win on handicap but John Cooper & Becci Wigley would relegate Mike & June Baker to third.

Meanwhile the medium fleet were off again for their second race. This time Dave Gorringe in his RS 100 was first to show with the other RS 100 of Richard Russell completing his first lap approx 1 ½ minutes behind. Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger were in third place at this time from The Streaker of Philip Gwyther. The order remained the same for the second and final lap. David Gorringe kept the handicap win but things changed behind with Philip Gwyther taking second and Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger taking third.

Sunday Late Series A & B –21st August 2011

The fifth race of the Sunday Late series A & B was sailed on 21st August 2011. The Race Officer was Mike Beggs.

8 fast fleet boats, 11 medium fleet and 1 slow fleet boats had signed on for this mornings racing. The wind, what there was of it was coming from the South West at 5 knots. With a tidal range of 1.2 metres, a bit more wind would be nice. It was wind with tide though.

The first start for the fast fleet was scheduled from Baverstock at 1030, but this was not to be. Having tried to run the first race it was abandoned.  The start for the fast fleet eventually happened at 11.30 with the race officer sending them to Plus Mark, Colten, then Jack in the Basket before returning to Baverstock.

First home at approx 1213hrs was Luke & Emma McEwen in their RS 800. They were followed by Nigel Walbank in his Musto Skiff with Peter Conway in his International canoe taking 3rd. This order would remain the same after the handicaps were applied.

This relegated Simon Ward & Sylvia Weger to 4th place and Richard Russell back to 5th.
