The idea of Saturday Sailing is that it is primarily an opportunity to learn new skills or improve existing ones within a friendly non-threatening environment where inexperience is not a handicap.
Saturday Sailing is an opportunity in the club to:
-
improve your sailing skills in a friendly environment
-
meet other dinghy sailors
-
sail with your own family
-
try out different types and classes of sailing dinghy
-
get to know the club in an informal way
-
learn how to race
Saturday Sailing takes place on Saturday afternoons, between April and November. You can take part in Saturday Sailing if you do not have a boat as there are boats you can borrow or if you have come without a crew, as helms, crews and boats are often arranged before or at the briefing. We have the use of the club 420, the club Vision dinghy and many Saturday sailors welcome new faces as crew. However make sure you turn up early (before 12.45, if you want to join in boat allocation, as latecomers will not be accommodated once arrangements for boats have been made).
All participants must complete LTSC Contact Sailing Experience >> and return to the Sailing Secretary.
After the sail you can sign off in the changing rooms entrance and come on up to the bar for an informal debrief.
The format for the afternoon is:-
12.30: Boat owners wishing to participate should advise Supervisor and then rig boats and get changed
12.45: Non boat owners should advise Supervisor of their wish to participate - club boats are available.
13.20: Safety boats to be on the water tied up to pontoon.
13.25: All participants including safety boat team to be dressed to go afloat and assemble in Lower Deck Bar or on the Club steps.
13.30: Briefing In Lower Deck Bar - Sign on and briefing about activities for the afternoon.
15.30: There will normally be an informal race from sailing area back to the Club - sign off - get changed and put boats away
16.30: Informal feedback session in the bar
We like to welcome families and often children sail with their parents. It is also an informal social occasion, as after sailing we meet in the bar for drinks and chat.

Many Saturday sailors have used it as an opportunity to learn the rudiments of racing, as the short races are organised by a club race officer and we have the full support of a rescue boat team. Saturday Sailing uses the ISAF Simplified Racing Rules. Many regular Saturday sailors have also started to club race on Wednesday evenings and Sundays. Some Saturday sailors see it as a family event and we have some regular family participants. Our arrangements with Salterns Sailing Club >> has enabled more young people to take part in Saturday sailing. Any young member of the club, over the age of 12 can come along and sail, once their parent has completed a parental consent form >>.
For further information about Saturday Sailing, please contact the Sailing Secretary. Letting us know whether you wish to crew or helm, whether or not you have your own boat and when you wish to start would be helpful.
