2011 Christchurch Ledge Race (Jul 10 2011)

Written by Barry Sticklen Sunday, 10 July 2011 00:00

The annual Christchurch Ledge race was sailed on Sunday 10th July. The Race Officer was Simon Ward, assisted by Sylvia Weger as Assistant Race Officer. At the time of the start the wind was coming from the South West at some 7 knots. This race was open to Yachts, Fast and Medium fleet dinghies. The yachts would sail a different course to the dinghies, and the dinghies would have the choice of either sailing to the North Head Buoy before heading home, or continuing on to the Christchurch Ledge buoy before turning back.

Only two yachts came to the line, but there were 16 dinghies signed up. Of these 16, four were undecided which course to sail and signed up for both. The start was from Baverstock at 1030hrs, the yachts would be taking their own finish times and the dinghies would be finished at the Club river line.

Of the 16 dinghies, five had opted to turn round at the North Head Buoy with the remainder going off to the Christchurch ledge buoy. Simon clocked the first one home, Richard Russell in his RS 100 just after 1203. Mike Beggs & Vicki Leen were next home in their Laser Stratos soon after 1213. Tim Power & L Boyd were next in their Tasar at 1217. They were in turn followed by Peter Wills & M Cook in their Wayfarer at 1219 with Adrian Baker, Streaker hot on their heels 5 seconds later. Richard Russell took the win on handicap from Adrian Baker 2nd and Mike Beggs & Vicki Leen 3rd.

In the meantime the fast boys and girls had been to the Christchurch Ledge buoy. The tide was almost kind to them (LW Lymington 1222) allowing them to catch the first of the flood on the way home. Luke & Emma McEwen in their RS 800 would be first home at 1239 followed by Nigel Walbank in his Musto Skiff who was in turn followed by Richard & Helen Keeton RS 800 then Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey in their International 14. Although Miles Mence in his Blaze was 10th home, this would change dramatically when the handicaps were applied. Nigel Walbank would take 1st place with Luke & Emma 2nd with Miles leapfrogging up the fleet to take 3rd.

The yachts were doing their own thing, also going out to the Christchurch ledge buoy and back. Tokoloshie, a Hunter 19 was first back to Baverstock, with Harry Ellens at the helm. 20 seconds later, the Otter, a Folkboat helmed by Nick Ingram would finish. When the Lymington Handicaps were applied to the yachts, Tokososhie would hang on to first place with the Otter second.

The Newtown race for dinghies was sailed on Sunday 5th June 2011. The race officer was David Gorringe assisted by Nick Lawrie.

It would be a single start for the dinghies with all of them sailing the same course. 14 boats of varying handicaps had signed on for this trophy race.

The course was set from Baverstock of, Berthon to port, Ribit.com to starboard, Hampstead Ledge to port, the finish line would be at the entrance to Newtown Creek. The tide would be flooding for the duration of the race and the wind was coming from the NNE at some 15 knots.

After starting the race officer would need to get either himself or one of the support RIBs over to the entrance to Newtown Creek to finish them all. He would also have the Classic Series yachts to finish, having sent them off on another course beforehand.

The first to appear at the finish line was one of the fast boats, the RS 800 of Richard & Helen Keeton. 2nd was Richard Lilley & Jules Thomas in another RS 800. Third home was the 29er of Geoff Havers & Jo Barriball who was followed by the Contender of David Gautier. When the handicaps were applied though, Richard & Helen had done enough to keep the win from David by just over 1 minute on corrected time.

Results:

1st Richard & Helen Keeton                         RS 800

2nd David Gautier                                       Contender

3rd Geoff Havers & Jo Barriball                     29er

2011Black Rock Race (Apr 24 2011)

Written by Barry Sticklen Sunday, 24 April 2011 00:00

The Black rock race was held at Lymington Town Sailing Club on 24th April 2011. The Start was to be from Baverstock at 10.30 am and the course would take in the Black rock navigation buoy off the distant shores of the Isle of Wight. The Sun was shining and the wind was coming from the North, North East at some 12 knots. Absolutely perfect.

29 dinghies came to the start line. The boats were varied, ranging from the RS 800’s of the fast boys & girls, like Luke & Emma McEwen and Richard & Helen Keeton; they would be sailing off a Portsmouth Yardstick Number of 822, to the Wayfarer of Adrian & Charlotte Bateman sailing off 1101. With most everything else in between.

The Race officer was Richard Lilley who was assisted by his normal crew, Julian Thomas. After a 5 minute delay they were off.

Luke & Emma McEwen in their RS 800 were first round the course followed by Richard & Helen Keeton also in an 800. Next came Peter Conway & Ginny Harvey in an International 14. They were in turn followed by Philip Lee in his International Canoe and Kevin Podger & Heather Chipperfield in an RS 400.

Although on handicap Luke & Emma would keep hold of the win. Dave Gorringe RS 100 (10.2 rig) would climb from 6th over the water to 2nd. And Ian Sanderson and Emma Vaughton, Merlin Rocket climbed from 7th to 3rd while Miles Mence, Blaze went from 8th to 4th. This would relegate Richard & Helen Keeton to 5th place on handicap.
