RYA YOUTH SAILING SCHEME

The Youth Scheme is usually completed in small dinghies suitable for your size. To make the most of our courses, ensure you are confident with the skills of one course before moving on to the next course. Most courses are a minimum of two days long (or an equivalent number of short sessions). They may be run over a longer period, especially if you haven’t sailed since your last course. Sailing is a sport which gets better with practice and you should try to sail between courses whenever you can. Practice makes perfect!

RYA SAILING STAGE 1

In a friendly atmosphere learn the basics of sailing in the clubs Laser Pico dinghies. For beginners to learn the basic skills of sailing a dinghy. Including how to rig, tie useful knots, launch, land and sail safely around a simple course. Log book included. This can lead to the RYA Stage 1 Award.

RYA SAILING STAGE 2

Up your level of ability on this course and learn a range of skills to help you become a confident sailor. You will be sailing up and down wind, tacking and gybing. This can lead to the RYA Stage 2 Award. Pre-course requirement to be RYA Stage 1 ability.

RYA SAILING STAGE 3

This course is designed to allow you to sail a small single handed dinghy independently in any direction. It will go into detail of rigging, launching, using rope and knots effectively, improving your sailing techniques by deepening your knowledge and skills. It will introduce you to racing and the technical aspects of how a sail and boat works as well as some of the rules of sailing.

Pre-course requirement to be at RYA Stage 2 ability.

RYA SAILING STAGE 4

The Stage 4 Course is designed as an introduction to sailing in a crewed dinghy and will also confirm all the elements of your previous courses whilst working as part of an effective sailing team.
